Maharashtra Deploys Smart Traffic Fencing to Guide Pedestrians

Mumbai’s traffic department has installed smart, sensor-enabled pedestrian fences at busy junctions such as Dadar and Andheri. The system includes LED guidance bars and pressure-sensitive sensors that detect overcrowding. During congested periods, LED pathways shift direction to distribute foot traffic evenly and prevent trampling or stampedes. The system integrates with city CCTV networks, generating occupancy maps that adjust pedestrian signals dynamically. Pilot tests reduced crossing time and improved safety during rush hours. Commuters praised the intuitive guidance, noting decreased wait chaos. Local authorities plan to extend this smart fencing to festival crowd zones and hospital corridors.
