The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, in collaboration with local NGOs, has initiated a micro-reservoir project targeting rainwater-starved neighbourhoods. These small catchment systems built within residential colonies collect runoff during monsoon, storing between 20,000 to 50,000 litres of water. Water is then used for gardening, toilet flushing, and groundwater recharge. Real-time sensors monitor water levels and usage patterns, accessible via a smartphone app. Within six months, six reservoirs serve over 2,000 households and have already reduced municipal water demand by 15%. Community trustees manage the storage, ensuring maintenance and equitable distribution. Training workshops on rooftop gutter maintenance and sustainable gardening further support the initiative. City officials plan to scale the model to 50 micro-reservoirs under Bangalore’s water-theft reduction strategy.
